Radio Noon Crosstalk On Cycling Thursday

CBC Radio Noon tomorrow Thursday July 29 will feature a 1-hour call-in Crosstalk session on cycling ... can cyclists and motorists get along?

This is a timely topic given that the City of St.John's has just approved their Cycling Plan. And the huge growth in cycling and triathlon has many more bikes on the road these days.

Call 722-7111 or 1-800-563-8255 from 12:30-1:30pm tomorrow to voice your opinion.

Council Has Spoke'n

After 3 years of study, planning and debate, City Council has approved the City of St.John's Cycling Plan.

Phases 1 & 2 will see almost 40 kilometers of road markings and cycling lanes forming a network throughout the City, and a small section of the Virginia River Trail will be widened for mixed use.

Support Needed For St.John's Cycling Plan

The City of St.John's Cycling Plan needs your vote!

The first phase includes a combination of designated bike lanes and shared use lane markings on about 40K of roads throughout the city. This work is set to start right away for completion in September but some residents (particularly on roads set to lose some of their on-street parking) have lobbied the city to scrap the plan.

If you are in favor of this long-awaited plan to make St.John's a bike-friendly city please take 20 seconds to visit ipetitions.com/petition/stjohnscyclingplan/ and get your name on the list. City Council is meeting THIS FRIDAY for further debate and without a strong show of support from the community this plan could be in jeopardy.

Sprockids Learn To Mountain Bike July 14

The first of 3 Sprockids Learn To Mountain Bike sessions is this Wednesday July 14th at 7pm. This program is suited to boys and girls (typically between the ages of 6 and 12 or so) who are looking to improve their general bike handling and mountain bike skills in a positive, fun, friendly environment. Leaders include certified cycling coaches and accomplished mountain bike riders who are keen to share in their passion for the sport.

The program will be delivered in some grassy fields and trails at Kenmount Hill, meeting at the intersection of George’s Pond Road and Old Pennywell Road (both dirt roads) off Blackmarsh Road as shown on the attached map.  Each session will run for approximately 1.5 hours.  If rescheduled due to weather you will be notified by email.

All participants should bring along a mountain bike in good working order, a helmet, a water bottle (attached to the bike if possible), and suitable clothing (snug fitting, layered clothing is best).  Registration & Medical Form is HERE and should be completed and brought to the first session along with the $10 fee (fee covers all 3 sessions).

Drop a line to admin@bnl.nf.ca if you are planning to attend.
